Dr. Steven Sunderraj
Physical Therapist, PT, DPT, USAW
Founder & Physical Therapist, Recalibrate Physical Therapy
Dr. Steven Sunderraj has been helping people recover from injury, rebuild their strength, and return to the things that matter to them since earning his Doctor of Physical Therapy degree in 2011.
His approach to physical therapy goes beyond treating pain or simply returning someone to where they were before an injury. Steve looks at the bigger picture: understanding what is limiting someone now, restoring what they have lost, and systematically developing the strength, movement and physical capacity they need for what comes next.
A central part of that approach is strength training and weightlifting.
Steve believes that when appropriately prescribed and progressively introduced, lifting weights can be one of the most effective tools in rehabilitation. Rather than treating strength training as something that begins after physical therapy, he integrates it into the rehabilitation process—using progressive loading to rebuild strength, increase physical capacity and prepare the body for the demands of everyday life, work, training or sport.
For one patient, that might mean progressing from crutches after surgery to lifting weights again. For another, it could mean learning to deadlift confidently despite a history of back pain. An athlete may need to rebuild the strength and capacity required for competition, while someone who has never exercised before may simply need to learn how to strength train safely and effectively for the first time.
The destination may be different. The principle is the same: build a body that is increasingly capable of handling what you ask of it.
Steve’s clinical approach combines rehabilitation, mobility, strength training, weightlifting and progressive loading in a deliberate process: restore movement where necessary, build strength, progressively increase what the body can tolerate, and bridge the gap between rehabilitation and real-world performance.
But his role doesn’t stop at being a physical therapist.
Steve increasingly asks patients to think of him as a consultant for their physical health and performance—someone who brings clinical expertise, experience and objective thinking to help them understand their body, solve problems and make better decisions about how they move and train.
Education is therefore fundamental to his approach. He wants patients to understand why they are doing something, not simply follow a list of exercises. They learn how to train appropriately, how to progress, how to respond when something doesn’t feel right, and how to make informed decisions about their body long after formal physical therapy has ended.
Because the ultimate goal isn’t dependence on physical therapy.
It’s independence.
Steve founded Recalibrate Physical Therapy in 2015 to create an environment built around that philosophy—one where rehabilitation doesn’t end simply because pain has disappeared, and where exercise isn’t viewed solely as a treatment for injury.
Instead, rehabilitation becomes an opportunity to recover, learn how to train, become stronger and develop greater physical capacity for the future.
Since beginning his career, Steve has worked across a broad spectrum of clinical needs—from post-operative rehabilitation and complex musculoskeletal cases to amateur and professional athletes. Yet his philosophy remains consistent regardless of who is standing in front of him.
Your goal doesn’t have to involve professional competition to matter.
It might be running again. Getting back under a barbell. Returning to a sport. Keeping up with your children. Doing your job without worrying about your body. Or simply feeling strong, capable and confident again.
For Steve, successful rehabilitation isn’t just about getting someone back to where they were.
It’s giving them the knowledge, strength and confidence to keep moving forward long after they no longer need him.
